Being someone who’s not even a fan of the word “exercise”, I only venture into a gym when I’m absolutely forced to. It’s not that I hate exercising, I just harbour a distaste for working out in spaces that are either rife with judgement or seem to celebrate society’s largely unattainable conception of what it means to be physically “perfect”.
Certainly, wander into any of the many boutique gyms that have cropped up of late and you will see the same person, ad infinitum; whether they are bending into unorthodox positions during some yoga, or perfecting their seven-minute-mile, everyone is toned, tan and beautiful. This is naturally intimidating for the majority of us, who as well as not being adonis-like, are novices at the whole “gymming” phenomenon.
With the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) estimating that three-quarters of the American population will be overweight or obese by 2020, it’s clear that more needs to be done to encourage people to exercise.
Luxury gyms such as Equinox charge its users a whopping $250 a month for their “temple of wellbeing” and whilst their classes are taught by former Olympians, I doubt that someone who was going to the gym solely to lose significant amounts of weight would benefit from eucalyptus scented towels and spa amenities, that is, if they could withstand being peer-pressured into eating kale by some of the gym’s more pretentious users.
But here is where Planet Fitness steps in. Designed to be a “judgement free zone” it provides safe exercise spaces who those who are either uncomfortable with their bodies, intimidated by hi-fi gym equipment or just prefer pizza and bagels to quinoa and green juice.
