Amateur Vs. Professional Photographs Shot in the Same Location Look Astonishingly Different

Any photography enthusiasts out there? If you enjoy capturing beautiful images but don’t live in a particularly beautiful place, things can get frustrating. Thankfully, there are experienced and talented experts out there who have some sage advice for aspiring photographers. 29 year old Marius Niklas Vieth, who is more popularly known by his childhood nickname Vijce, is a Dutch-German fine-art photographer who has a particular passion for street photography. He is the CEO of Neoprime Fine Arts, a fine-arts label that supports emerging photographers, sells his prints and publishes a fine art magazine called Neoprime Contemporary Fine Art Photography.  In 2017, he set up another fine arts label called Eye, Heart & Soul, which offers workshops, podcasts and an online magazine.

Vijce has also received several accolades for his work, including a CBRE Urban Photographer of the Year award in 2014 and being shortlisted in the top 10 for the Sony World Photography Awards in 2015 in two categories: “Culture & Arts” and “People”. With this wealth of experience, Vijce recently gave top tips for shooting amazing images even in seemingly uninspiring locations. He spoke about his time living in German city Dusseldorf, which does not have as many landmarks as more renowned locations like New York, Paris or London. His time here taught him how to seek out striking images in places one would least expect. His advice can be boiled down to the following tips.

1. Pick one location.

Vijce advises aspiring photographers to pick a spot were a person walks by at least once every 10 minutes. When you pick that location, stay there. According to Vijce, simply passing by a place allows you to see what everyone else sees. However, taking time to stay in a location and study it can encourage you to see things most might overlook, which could be the beginning of capturing a fantastic image. He advises spending around 30 minutes doing this.

2. Try different perspectives.

Both in terms of observing surroundings from different vantage points, and also playing around with the camera, Vijce encourages photographers to try different things.

“Lay on the ground, walk around, turn your head left, right, up and down – try as many different perspectives as possible. Experiences this location in different light settings, types of weather and atmospheres. You’ll notice so many major and subtle differences that will offer you new opportunities.”

3. Observe.

Vijce says it is crucial to observe in detail, in order to possibly predict what might happen next. Perhaps people tend to take a certain route when walking through a certain area. Could this spark an interesting idea for capturing a particular moment in this journey?

4. Think.

This is the final step before you get to clicking. Consider what the composition of your image will be, taking into account all of the aforementioned factors. Once this is done, you’re well on your way to creating a stunning image.
