22 Jun Alton Towers Ride Breaks Down, Leaving People Stuck 80 Feet in the Air
I have an irrational fear of theme park rides. Let’s start with that.
A photograph of me as a child, slumped in utter terror whilst riding a rollercoaster has become something of a family legend; I was young and wearing an oversized hoodie, and such was my desire to flatten myself to the seat of the ride that it appears to all intents and purposes that a discarded hoodie had been left on the coaster by a previous theme park goer.
I am surely not alone in my morbid fear of theme park rides. Perhaps it is the lack of control one experiences as they hurtle around a track, possibly it is the giddy reckless abandon of one’s fellow passengers as they hoist their hands above their head screaming inanely, apparently blithely unaware of how horribly wrong everything could go at any second.
Though theme park ride malfunctions and accidents are extremely rare – due to the rigorous safety measures most theme parks employ – they do still occur. Indeed, it was only two years ago that the Smiler rollercoaster at popular theme park Alton Towers crashed, during which 16 people were reportedly injured.
Now, it has been reported that another ride at the theme park, Galactica, left theme park goers stuck 80 ft in the air for several minutes.
