In this modern age, it is incredibly easy to fall into a mindset that prioritizes your own wants and needs over those of others.

Those of us who happen to be millennials, or perhaps even part of Generation Z, were, quite frankly, raised to be selfish.

We were given expensive gadgets from an incredibly young age, we expected to receive a consistent allowance regardless of whether we deserved it or not, and we were made to feel as if we deserved everything we set our eyes on.

This does not necessarily mean we are bad people; just that we have grown accustomed to a life of ease and unessential items.

But there are, of course, exceptions to the rule – one example being 17-year-old high school student, Max Akin.

Moments after Akin was crowned Homecoming King, he left his fellow students at Fossil Ridge High School completely floored when he decided to give his crown, along with his title, to the runner-up.

The teenager who played as a quarterback for his high school football team was crowned homecoming king at his school in Eller, Texas last week during the halftime of a game against a team from Saginaw.

However, after receiving the crown, Akin kneeled down and gave it away to one of the competitors for the title, K.L. Norwood, who has cerebral palsy.

“I didn’t know when I would have the right time to do it,” Akin told WFAA. “But I saw K.L., came over and gave him a hug, and I knew that he wanted that crown more than anything.”

“I think it should’ve gone to the person who positively uplifts the school and everybody around him, and that person is K.L., for sure,” Akin continued. “I thought it was the best hearing them chant K.L.’s name right after halftime, and I know he liked that, too.”

Norwood, who is the Keller Fossil Ridge football team manager, said that Akin was “his favorite quarterback”. And I’m sure after what Akin did for him last week, Norwood is his favorite player in the history of the game.

It was incredibly kind-hearted of Akin to give Norwood his crown, especially considering what a milestone moment it would be for any high school student to receive such an honor. Hopefully, more and more youngsters will follow suit and do something equally as selfless and generous for their fellow human.
