According To Research, The Average American Woman Is Now No Longer A Size 14

Any woman who has shopped at more than one retailer in her life can tell you that sizing is not the standardized and simple thing it claims to be. If you’re a size eight, you might fit into size two at some stores and a size 12 at others, which can lead the shopping process to be not only frustrating, but often rather upsetting.

Some people have grown so upset with these unrealistic standards that they’ve taken to social media to voice their anger at certain fashion moguls, like this girl who called out H&M’s ridiculous sizing in a viral post.

In an attempt to know once and for all what the average sizes are (and what retail averages should be), two researchers from Washington State University decided to create a study that would compare the fashion industry with reality. The study, published in the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology, and Education, looked at the measurements of 5,550 women over the age of 20 and compared the sizes they found with fashion industry sizing standards.

Data from a decade ago found that the average size of American women was a 14, a size that typically lies just on the line between standard and plus-size. Researchers Deborah A. Christel and Susan C. Dunn decided to look again at this statistic, as it hadn’t been researched in years, despite 14 was still consistently dubbed the “average size” by scholars, designers, and fashion workers alike. The update proved to be quite necessary, as Christel and Dunn found that the average size of the American is no longer 14, it’s something very different.
