The last few years have not been particularly kind when it comes to the public perception of American police officers, and many of the men and women who work in law enforcement and civil protection have lately been left concerned that reputations of certain police precincts around the country have been irrevocably tarnished.
Activists from the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as a number of other lower-profile protesting organisations, have drawn significant amounts of attention to cases of corruption, racial discrimination, wanton abuse of firearms and deadly force, and a laundry list of other indiscretions and felonies within U.S. police departments.
Although the number and ratio of policemen and policewoman who commit these offences is comparatively small, the effect that cases of genuine negligence has upon the institution as a whole is catastrophic. We depend upon police officers to protect and serve, and when the public feels that it can no longer trust or safely rely upon its duly appointed custodians, then the whole delicate fabric of civil authority begins to unspool itself.
Which is why stories like this one are so important: they prove that the majority of police officers are fallible human beings attempting to maintain order despite heavy press scrutiny, shrinking budgets, red tape and vilification from the community. It’s undeniable that lives, particularly those of minorities, have been ruined as a result of the abuse of power, but when police officers show a more understanding, compassionate, and above all fun-loving side of their nature, then it can surely go a long way towards rehabilitating them.
