A US policy expert described it as a “human tragedy”. Philip Mangano, a former head of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, was speaking about the record numbers of people sleeping rough in Los Angeles, California, which rose by 25% from last year to a shocking figure of 55,188 in May 2017 – the highest figures since records began ten years ago. Los Angeles alone accounts for a huge proportion of the number of homeless people across the US. Recent estimates from the last few years consistently place this figure above 500,000 – the most recent report lists the number as 549,928. The problem is particularly severe in Western states like California, where one in five of all homeless Americans live. California, Hawaii, Nevada and Oregon account for more than half of all homeless people in the US and seven out of 10 of the states with the highest rates of homeless are found in the western half of the country.
The UK is also facing a housing crisis, with the number of homeless people in England rising by 16% from last year – the sixth year in a row this figure has gone up. Within England, London alone accounts for 23% of the total figure, mirroring the problem major cities like Los Angeles face when it comes to homelessness.
With the huge numbers of people struggling to find regular shelter, the situation can look quite bleak but one man’s story is showing that things can get better with time. From being a fast-rising young star of his company to suddenly becoming unemployed, Mylo Kaye has now become a successful entrepreneur who is sharing his story to encourage others.
