Man Orders Vegetarian Option on Flight, Gets Worst Airline Meal in History

Isn’t airline food the worst? Yes, we all know what it’s like to be stuck with barely edible meals – particularly during long-haul flights. I’ve wondered many times why airlines don’t get it right but it turns out it’s not entirely their fault. High altitudes play a huge role in our perception of taste. At high altitudes our taste buds simply don’t work properly. The low humidity dries out our nasal passages, and the air pressure desensitises our taste buds, which is why airline often opt for salty stews or spicy curries. Airlines try to overcome this by tasting food and wine on board a flight before approving a new menu for public consumption. Some airlines install sealed rooms in their kitchens room to replicate the experience of eating at high altitudes and check for variation in taste.

Scientific explanation aside, many of us still cringe at the thought of some of the meals we’ve had to endure while on a flight. Even celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, who has worked extensively with airlines to improve their food offering, has publicly stated that he doesn’t eat flight meals. Ramsay has worked with Singapore Airlines as a consultant, but told Refinery29 in March 2017 that airline catering was not for him.

“There’s no f****** way I eat on planes. “I worked for airlines for 10 years, so I know where this food’s been and where it goes, and how long it took before it got on board.”

One Reddit user might just be switching over to #TeamGordon soon and ditching in-flight meals. During a flight with Aegean Airlines, the largest Greek airline by total number of passengers carried, number of destinations served and fleet size. You would think such a successful airline wouldn’t have a problem catering for a wide range of passengers, and its website suggests this is the case. A wide range of specialist meals, including halal, gluten-free, kosher and diabetic-friendly options, are listed on the airline’s website.
