02 Jul Huge Fire Breaks Out in London Apartment Building
With London still reeling from the Grenfell inferno in West London which has been recorded as having an official death toll of 79, many residents are in a heightened state of concern when it comes to fire risks. The horrific blaze has sparked much debate about the death toll, fire safety and government responsibility. Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott has publicly questioned the official figures, saying she expects “that the numbers of people that have died will be in triple figures, just because it’s a 23-storey (sic) block”, insisting that the true death toll is more likely to be in the “hundreds”. There has also been criticism regarding how victims were treated afterwards, with many members of the community observing a disconnect between the large amounts of supplies generously donated by the public and inadequate distribution channels to get clothes, food and other resources to survivors in a timely manner.
Another block of flats – much smaller than Grenfell – also reported a fire. This time in East London, the fire is believed to have begun in a third-floor flat around 4.25pm on 24 June 2017. 72 firefighters and 10 fire engines responded to the scene and one person had to be treated for smoke inhalation. The London Fire Brigade reported that the roof of the building was “completely damaged”. Now, yet another building in the Bethnal Green area has seen a major fire which has shocked residents and sparked renewed fears over fire safety in the capital.
