Circumcision is a widely practiced phenomenon, whether it be for religious reasons, cultural preferences, or belief in its health benefits. In many Western cultures, circumcision is practiced immediately after birth, done by medical professionals, and typically utilizes anesthesia to ease the pain. In Turkey, however, the religious ritual of circumcision follows the belief that pain is an integral part of the tradition, leading many to be done without any anesthesia at all.

The tradition, called sunnet, has special significance in Turkey, where it is seen as the first step from boyhood to manhood. A single glance at their faces, and one immediately winces at the unfathomable pain these boys experience.
