The characters actors portray on screen are typically a world away from who they are in real life. While some roles which might attract them because they relate to the character, this isn’t usually the case. An exception, however, is The Mountain from Game of Thrones.

Just like his on-screen counterpart, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, is an impressively strong man. The 29-year-old former basketball player and professional strongman had never acted professionally until he landed the role in August 2013.

Famed on the show for his daunting physical stature (which has come in handy given that his job is basically to protect the much-hated Cersei Lannister), Björnsson’s grandfather admitted that even when he was a child he “was always big, even when he wasn’t tall.”

Now, Björnsson has shown that he is a force to be reckoned with outside of Westeros by winning the 2018 Arnold Strongman Classic. This involved lifting a staggering 1,041 pounds and setting a new world record – a feat which left his Russian rival, Mikhail Shivlyakov, covered in blood.

Björnsson revealed that he was on track to beat the record when he managed to deadlift 1,003 pounds last month.

Meanwhile, Shivlyakov found himself in the emergency room after attempting to lift 939 pounds – something which caused the 37-year-old’s nose to burst with blood.

Well, if Björnsson’s current shape is anything to go by, he’s certainly not going to get taken out easily in the last season of Game of Thrones.
