15 Reasons Why Not Tipping Your Server 20% Is The Right Thing To Do

Working as a server is a job like no other. When I began my first ever job as a waitress, I had no idea quite what I was getting myself into. I was not working as a server in any old restaurant, I was serving the elderly in a care home and that meant a lot of complaints. One morning, I was even lobbed in the face with a coat hanger.

But it’s an easy job. All you need to do is scuttle to the kitchen like the lowly worker you are, collect whatever food has been ordered and bring it back to the person you are serving in a timely fashion. There were some added extras like people throwing up and hitting each other with teacups, but it was no biggie.

The general public wants as much as they can get for as little as possible, and they are quite right in thinking that servers do not deserve a 20% tip.

I’ve spoken to several of my colleagues and they’ve detailed the pure joys of working in restaurants and cafes as waiters and waitresses. They honestly couldn’t get enough of being barked at by managers, blamed by chefs and belittled by customers. In fact, one female co-worker of mine loved being slapped on the ass so much, she hated the fact she had to leave.

Nevertheless, here are 15 reasons why servers really don’t deserve that extra 20% tip…

1. Servers have EXTREMELY well-paid jobs…

2.  Their managers never talk down to them…

3. Servers do not need to think much at work…

4. Every penny counts…

5. Servers eat like kings…

Working as a server is as easy as riding a bike. Only that bike is on fire and the kitchen is on fire and the food is on fire because you are in hell. You have countless orders to remember, and, if you accidentally get one wrong, do not expect sympathy. Expect to get shouted at. And, as was the case for me, spat at.

It does not matter whether you are a student trying to get through college without getting into crippling debt, or an adult who simply cannot get a better (and easier) job. If you have found yourself working as a server, you are scum and deserve to get worked until your fingers bleed.

6. Servers really don’t mind having to take the blame for somebody else

7. I mean, it’s not like they’re constantly reminded how expendable they are

8. The hours are SO reasonable…

9. There is nothing to clean up because the food is so good…

10. No one would hit on a server. They are scum after all…

Speaking of getting hit on, one of the most horrific moments of my late teens involved getting groped by a man in his late 90s after I served him a cup of tea. I’m not sure what was worse – the fact that I could not object or that I have never forgotten the way he said ”Oh very nice…” as he touched me. I should really see a therapist.

Servers have to work antisocial hours. I had to get up when it was still dark so that I could be in work and ready to serve any early birds who wanted breakfast at 7 am. The thought of going into work, however, kept me up most of the night, and I almost always arrived bleary-eyed and ready to pack the job in…

11. Sometimes servers become accidental nutritionists…

12. They get accused of a lot of things…

13. Let’s not forget the cleaning side of the job…

14. Servers have more skills than circus performers…

15. And they have to share their tips so why bother anyway?!

So, ladies and gentlemen, after reading the above, do you honestly think it is unreasonable for servers to expect a 20% tip? Unless their service is particularly poor, do the right thing and give them what they are due. You have no idea what really goes on behind the kitchen door of your favorite restaurant.
