Doomsday Clock Set At Two Minutes To Midnight As World Moves Closer To Nuclear Apocalypse

The Doomsday Clock has been moved two minutes closer to midnight due to fears that a nuclear war could begin any time now. Scientists from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist announced the decision this afternoon.

The initial idea behind the clock was to use it as a means of measuring the risk of a nuclear war, but it’s now been updated to include other science-based issues such as those surrounding artificial intelligence and climate change.

The clock was moved forward due to the seemingly never-ending tensions that have been growing between North Korea leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump over the past year.

Put simply, the fear that a nuclear war will arise between the US and North Korea is greater than ever.

The nations of Russia and Iran may also pose a threat as the former becomes increasingly aggressive and Iran maintains its atomic ambitions.

“To call the nuclear state ‘dire’ is to underestimate the situation,” Rachel Bronson, the president and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist, said.

Check out the stark warning for yourself:

“Major nuclear actors are on the cusp of a new arms race, one that will be very expensive and will increase the likelihood of accidents and misperceptions. Across the globe, nuclear weapons are poised to become more rather than less usable because of nations’ investments in their nuclear arsenals,” Bronson added.
