23 Jan Shakira Is Reportedly Facing Jail Time From Spanish Authorities

When you’re rich and famous, it’s easy to forget to tend to the day-to-day activities of being a normal citizen. However, this can have potentially life-changing consequences, especially if you’ve got a sizable salary and have been accused of tax evasion.

This is why 40-year-old Columbian superstar Shakira is now facing jail for tax evasion between 2011 and 2014.

Spanish tax authorities have requested an investigation into the 40-year-old’s financial affairs during this period after a complaint was lodged last year that she could have failed to pay the correct taxes.

From 2011 to 2014, Shakira was reportedly living full time in Spain and was therefore subject to paying taxes not just on her earnings there but elsewhere in the world – the latter of which she failed to do, Catalan daily La Vanguardia reported.

Shakira shot to worldwide fame in the early noughties with her best-selling album Laundry Service (2001), although she had already sold over 10 million albums in Latin America alone before its release.

Since then, she’s had a number of hit songs including ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ and ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)’, the latter of which was the biggest-selling World Cup song of all time.
