There is no feeling in the world that can compare to the one you experience when a loved one passes away. The idea of a future without the one you love by your side is something millions of people have to consider each and every day. It’s a bleak prospect which can only be lightened by the belief that somehow they’re still here with us.

We look for signs to confirm the presence of those in our heart in the world around us, for some these signs come almost straightaway, for others it can feel like a whole lifetime has passed before anything appears. For Nigel Fitton, it was four years before he’d see a hint of his wife materialize in his life.

In 2013, Nigel’s life changed forever after his beloved wife, Phedre, passed away after a five year battle with cancer. The loss of his wife, whom he’d been devoted to since he was 16-years-old, left Nigel distraught. But despite his extreme turmoil, he committed himself to watering a houseplant which 69-year-old Phedre had ordered him to take care of shortly before her death.

Desperate to comply with his wife’s final wishes, Nigel diligently watered the plant every day. Clearly not a natural green thumb, Nigel was completely oblivious to the fact that the plant was consistently thriving and showing no signs of any growth or deterioration.

It wasn’t until his daughter, 46-year-old Antonia Nichol, a firefighter based in London, flew to South Africa to help her father move from the home he’d shared with Phedre to a retirement home that the plant’s legitimacy came into question.
