18 Jan Man Wrongly Imprisoned Finally Clears His Name After A Simple Google Search

If you are a well behaved, law-abiding citizen, you assume that you will not get into any trouble with the law. However, despite being made to believe that the police have our best interests at heart and are there to protect us, this isn’t always the case.

Although they are probably few and far between, some members of the police will go out of their way to frame innocent people. Back in the 70s, Stephen Simmons was one of these innocent people whose name was tarnished for a crime he didn’t commit.

Simmons was found guilty of stealing mailbags more than 40 years ago despite never having committed the crime. Astonishingly, the 62-year-old’s conviction was only recently overturned, four decades after the life-changing verdict was made.

In June 1975, a 19-year-old Simmons, who now works as a businessman, and two of his friends were arrested in Clapham, south London. After the teenager from Surrey, England, was found guilty, he served eight months in a youth detention center.

Simmons had always maintained that he was innocent and would later talk about the detrimental impact the conviction had on his life.

Despite his innocence, it was something he was made to feel ashamed about. In fact, he hadn’t even told his grown-up daughters about the ordeal until recently.

Forty-three years later, his case returned to court when the Criminal Cases Review Commission referred the matter to the Appeal Court last year.
