09 Jan Vets Left Baffled After Kitten Born With Two Faces Defies The Odds And Survives
A very unusual kitten named Bettie Bee has been born in Eastern Cape, South Africa. Like many cats, Bettie Bee has four paws, two ears, and a tail. But she particularly special because she also has two mouths, two noses, and three eyes! She appears to have two faces and veterinarians are baffled that she has been able to survive.
Bettie Bee is one of a litter of three kittens born almost two weeks ago, but she is the only one to have this condition. As a result, it was more difficult for her to nurse, and her owners were afraid she wasn’t getting enough nutrition.
Bettie Bee’s owners took her to a vet but were told that they should put her down because her condition was likely to decline rapidly as she aged. Usually, animals with this condition die before birth, or very shortly after.
But Bettie Bee’s owners wouldn’t give up on her. Instead, they took her to an animal rescue center where she was tube fed, and now she is thriving! She will have to return to the vet for scans and checkups as she ages, but her owners are optimistic about her survival.
Bettie Bee is what’s called a Janus cat, named for the Roman god with two faces. More specifically, her condition is called craniofacial duplication, which is an extremely rare birth defect that causes some facial features to duplicate in the womb.
While Janus cats do not usually survive, some, like Bettie Bee do and live long and healthy lives. If you’d like to see how this kitten/these kittens live, check out the amazing video below:
