For a majority, retirement comes complimentary with a membership to your local golf club or a free pass to watch television endlessly without judgment. After all, when you’ve spent your whole life working, you’re entitled to a little self-indulgence.
However, as with everything in life there is always one exception to the rule. Instead of settling into a life of crochet patterns and crossword puzzles, 67-year-old Greta Pontarelli from San Diego has devoted her newfound time to pole dancing.
Greta, who competed as a gymnast during her teenage years, discovered pole dancing eight years ago while searching online for exercises to help her strengthen her bones.
Instantly, she knew it was the sport for her and a few weeks later she signed up for a free session at her local studio. “It was difficult,” she recalls. “I know I have that gymnastic background, but I hadn’t done it in years, and it’s not like riding a bike, where you can just pick up where you left off. I think the teacher assumed I wouldn’t be back, but there was something about it that had me hooked.”
Quickly Greta began to build her strength after committing to several classes. “I’d celebrate those little victories to help motivate me,” she explains.
