09 Jan Mathematicians Warn That Plummeting Temperatures Could Cause A ‘Mini Ice Age’ By 2030
If you think that it’s cold right now, just wait until 2030! That’s when scientists say we could enter a “mini ice age”. Temperatures could start dropping as soon as 2021 – with have catastrophic consequences.
The possibility of this mini ice age was determined by using a new mathematical model of the sun’s solar cycle. The model, which was developed at Northumbria University, measures the change in solar radiation, sunspots and other solar activity over an 11-year cycle.
Mathematicians using the model have predicted that solar activity will begin to fall sharply and could trigger a phenomenon called the Maunder Minimum.
The Maunder Minimum is the term used to describe the 11-year period when sunspots became exceedingly rare between 1646 and 1715, causing a mini ice age. Then, temperatures dropped steeply, and even the River Thames in London froze over.
Needless to say, a mini ice age could have consequences a lot worse than this…
Valentina Zharkova, a professor of mathematics at Northumbria University, however, said this mini ice age could be shorter than the last.
“The upcoming Maunder Minimum is expected to be shorter than the last one in the 17th century (five solar cycles of 11 years). It will be lasting about three solar cycles,” she said.
