Just think about it: you’re getting intimate with your partner (or a stranger, we won’t judge) and suddenly you look up to see the faces of a film crew, half hidden behind high-quality camera equipment, staring intently at you. But rather than be disconcerted by this, you have to carry on as if nobody is watching.

Despite the discomfort you feel at the fact that your naked body is exposed under bright studio lights, you have to make your actions look authentic for the benefit of the millions of people who will watch the scene at the cinema.

For an actor, this scenario is simply part of the job, something you’re contractually obliged to do. But while stars on the screen may make it look easy, behind-the-scenes there is nothing romantic or natural about it, something the following actors have all been very open about – be warned, this could ruin some of your favorite films…

1. Kate Winslet in Titanic

In 1997, a young Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio made one of the most iconic scenes in movie history when they got down to it for a steamy sex scene in Titanic. Despite the potent chemistry between the pair (to this day they remain best friends and nothing more) they found that scene quite a challenge. Talking to Rolling Stone, Winslet explained:

“The Rose in me was really sort of loving the Jack in him, actually. And even though I didn’t feel that way about Leo, it was quite nice to sort of feel that way in the scene. It was quite lovely. And then, y’know, the camera stopped rolling, and he gets up and walks off, and the scene’s done. And I remember lying there thinking, ‘What a shame that’s over.’ Because it was quite nice. It was.”

2. Dakota Johnson in Fifty Shades of Grey

Playing Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, Dakota Johnson features in some of the film industry’s most erotic scenes. As the wife of Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan, she is envied by millions around the world. However, behind-the-scenes there is nothing desirable about her situation…

“The scenes in that room [The Red Room] were definitely the most vulnerable scenes in the movie. But it was a very closed set — my mom [Melanie Griffith] told me that it’s my right to ask for that during intimate scenes, so it seemed like [Jamie Dornan and director, Sam Taylor-Johnson and I] were in this little world together.”

Dornan echoed this view when he said: “Some of the Red Room stuff was uncomfortable. There were times when Dakota was not wearing much, and I had to do stuff to her that I’d never choose to do to a woman.”

3. Jon Hamm in Bridesmaids

Jon Hamm is famous for his sex appeal as Mad Men’s Don Draper, but there was nothing attractive about the 46-year-old actor when he played Kristen Wiig’s love interest in the smash-hit comedy, Bridesmaids. Talking to Playboy, Hamm explained:

“I mean, sure, there’s awkwardness about being in a weird flesh-colored thong, bouncing on top of an actress. I am not a small human being. I weigh at least 200 pounds and I’m six-foot-two. And Wiig is a twig; she’s a skinny little thing. 

It’s weird and uncomfortable at first, but then all the awkwardness melts away and you think, All right, we’re doing this, so let’s have fun with it. You know what I mean? You’re in that moment and it’s happening and it’s not going to get any better, so you might as well enjoy it.”
