08 Nov Mariah Carey Undergoes Gastric Sleeve Surgery After Relentless Body-Shaming
Mariah Carey has always been known for her curvy figure, but after her fans body-shamed her online, the singer decided to undergo weight loss surgery to slim down.
The procedure was performed six weeks ago and Carey is already seeing results.
The procedure is called gastric sleeve surgery and involves removing part of the stomach to make it smaller so that the patient eats less to feel full. It only requires a small incision, so scaring is minimal and complication rates are low.
Carey claims she became self-conscious about her curves after fans had made negative comments online about her figure. The songstress’ weight has fluctuated in the past and Carey had packed on some extra pounds in the past year.
Carey previously lost 70 pounds after the birth of her twins, Moroccan and Monroe, and claims strict diet and exercise helped her slim down then, but says she never used a scale. Rather than weigh herself, she measured her body size against how well she fit into her ideal dress size.
Carey explained her slim down to the press in 2011: “I never weighed myself. People will think I’m a liar but it’s true… I’m a big-boned girl, I’m tall, and so I always weigh more.
“I would tend to go, ‘Does this size dress fit me that I wore three years ago?’ I would go by what it looked like, how I felt.”
This time, Carey opted for surgery, and it may have been to achieve a quicker result. Aside from online body-shaming, the singer was allegedly also having trouble dancing due to her size.
