02 Nov Surgeons Use Magnet To Remove 600 Iron Nails From Man’s Stomach
We all get food cravings. Mine usually come at 11 o’clock at night when I’m trying to get to sleep, but won’t be able to until I’ve stuffed my face with four packets of Doritos. However, some people get much more bizarre cravings.
Pica is a type of eating disorder that causes people to persistently eat items with no nutritional value. It’s estimated that somewhere between 2% and 26% of the world’s population enjoys a munch of paint chips, hair, dirt, or rocks now and then.
The disorder can cause negative health effects, but one man with a penchant of eating sharp, iron nails is lucky to be alive. Surgeons managed to removed 600 nails from the man’s stomach without a single puncture!
In a small village outside of Calcutta, India, 48-year-old Pradip Kumar Dhali started complaining of severe pain in his abdomen two months ago. He family took him to see a doctor who ordered an ultrasound.
No one could believe what the ultrasound revealed. It showed that 600 iron nails were lodged in the man’s stomach. Dhali had been eating the metal items when he was alone.
Dhali was admitted to the hospital where he underwent surgery. Amazingly, doctors removed all of the nails using a magnet.
Dr Siddhartha Biswas from the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in India led the surgical team that operated on Dhali. He had been a guest doctor at the local clinic in Dhali’s village. He described the procedure as high risk and said that there could have been a possibility of piercing the stomach wall.
“Last month his family had brought the ultrasound report to us. I was shocked to find nails in his abdomen. We decided to operate on him. It was risky as his stomach had become abnormally big and was completely filled with nails. But luckily it did not pierce the stomach.”
