27 Oct Samara From ‘The Ring’ Is All Grown Up And She’s Gorgeous
In the noughties, few horror movies gained as much notoriety as The Ring. Released in 2002, it was a remake of the 1998 Japanese movie Ringu – which gained cult status in the West where the horror genre had been dominated by slasher flicks.
Unlike slasher movies which depicted a lot of violence and gore on-screen, The Ring relied on psychological horror to scare its viewers, and boy did it work. To this day, The Ring is still cited as being one of the scariest horror movies of all time.
Centred around the urban legend of a video tape which kills viewers within seven days of watching it, The Ring follows journalist Rachel after she’s hired to investigate the death of teen who saw the tape. It doesn’t take long for her to encounter the evil spirit Samara.
Eleven-year-old Samara’s ghost is played by Daveigh Chase, who was just 12 at the time of the movie’s release. Orphaned at birth, Samara was a powerful young woman who accidentally terrorised her adoptive parents, causing her mother to drown her in a well.
Samara possessed the power of “thoughtography”, which is how she inadvertently terrorised her parents. It allowed her to burn images and thoughts onto other people’s minds and eventually enabled her to create the cursed video tape from the well.
When the video is viewed, her ghost is temporarily free to enact her revenge on the world…
As you can imagine, playing a vengeful ghost is no easy task for a child actor, but Chase rose to the challenge after getting her big break earlier that year in Lilo and Stitch. Her performance was so good that she won the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain.
But what happened to Chase after The Ring? Well, she continued acting, notably in HBO’s Big Love, and grew into a gorgeous young woman.
