However, for one 23-year-old woman from Jackson, Michigan, sex has never been about connecting with a partner or about exploring her sexuality. For Amanda McLaughlin, sex has always been about alleviating the intense physical and mental pain that she feels.

Sex is a necessity for Amanda McLaughlin. She has Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD), and despite making concerted efforts to seek medical help for nearly a decade, no effective, long-term treatment has been found.

“It’s not fun to be aroused all the time” Amanda insisted “Would you want to have a raging boner 24/7? It’s non-stop.”

Amanda has confessed to being upset by the fact that people’s initial perception about her disorder is that it’s essentially a benign condition that simply increases her sex drive.

In actual fact, her life is dominated by pain, loneliness and medication.

“It feels like you’re about to orgasm and then it never goes away,” Amanda explained.

Amanda was diagnosed with PGAD in 2013 when she was just 19 years old. She had never heard of the disorder, but after learning more about it, it was undeniable that her symptoms ticked all the boxes.

As young as 13, Amanda knew there was something wrong.

Although no one should ever feel shame about masturbating, there was no denying that her constant need to orgasm was beyond excessive.

Amanda was well aware that she pleasured herself far more than any of her peers, but at that time she had very few options available to her.
