17 Oct Former Member Of Pussycat Dolls Says The Band Was Used As A “Prostitution Ring”
It doesn’t matter if you were a fan of the Pussycat Dolls or not, in some capacity, the iconic girl band will have impacted your life in the noughties. Even today they are still extremely prominent, with cheesy club nights being dominated by their sensational hits.
The leading ladies controversially inspired a generation with their risqué dance routines and skimpy outfits. However, a former member of the group, Kaya Jones, has now come forward to reveal that there was something much more sinister hiding behind the seductive stage costumes and smash hit songs.
The 33-year-old singer was talent scouted by disgraced rapper R.Kelly at the tender age of 13, before she joined the Pussycat Dolls in 2003. However, she left the band before they released their debut album in 2005 claiming that being a part of the girl group “stopped being fun”. Explaining her decision to leave, Kaya said:
“When everyone is not on the same page it affects the group so that I think was the worst part and I decided to leave. It was not because I wanted to be solo and I didn’t want to be in a group anymore, I left because it stopped being enjoyable.”
Kaya, whose real name is Chrystal Neria, may not have been a part of the band during their success but she claims to have seen the dirty side of the music industry during the two years that she was part of The Pussycat Dolls. In a series of explosive tweets on Saturday and Sunday, Kaya accused managers and executives of taking advantage of the group she joined as a teenager.
“My truth. I wasn’t in a girl group. I was in a prostitution ring. Oh & we happened to sing & be famous. While everyone who owned us made the $”
“How bad was it? people ask – bad enough that I walked away from my dreams, bandmates & a 13 million dollar record deal. We knew we were going to #1 (sic)”
The group was initially formed in 1995 as a modern burlesque troupe, but it wasn’t until much later that they began to explore a career in the music industry. In 2003, the Pussycat Dolls as we know them today was formed, consisting of several old members of the troupe, such as Ashley Roberts and Kimberley Wyatt, and new additions, Nicole Scherzinger, Melody Thornton and Kaya Jones.
