10 Oct If You Get A Call From This Number, Hang Up Immediately Or It Could Cost You Thousands
Phone scams are becoming increasingly elaborate and sophisticated, and so it can be difficult to recognize if the person on the other end is a fraud. These days, there is a whole range of phone scams that we have to contend with. We deal with everything from alarming cold calls to text messages from unknown numbers.
Gone are the days when we could trust anyone who claimed to be an employee of a reputable company. These cons have one in aim in mind – to steal your hard-earned cash, and they’re constantly coming up with new ways to do just that.
There is now a brand new scam rising through the ranks in the world of phone fraud. This new scam is known as “spoofing” and gives its victims the impression that an incoming call on their phone is coming from their own number.
So if you do get a call from a number that is entirely identical to your own, don’t answer it. Answering these kinds of calls and complying with the scammer’s instructions could put you at risk of identity theft and could allow them access into your bank account.
Thousands of people all over the country have been victims of these kinds of phone scams. Fortunately, because phone scams are so common these days, those who have received such phone calls usually treat them with suspicion. Many miss the calls and those who answer tend to hang up once they’ve heard what the scammer has to say.
One man who could have fallen victim to these scams, Donny Claxton, spoke to WFAA about the bizarre phone call he received and how he handled it.
“My phone starts ringing and at that hour of the night, you are alarmed at who is calling you. […] I look at the phone, and it’s me and I am looking. How am I calling myself? And I look at my phone. And there is no one there. And then it hangs up.”
