To an outsider looking in, it would certainly seem that the world is at a breaking point. With North Korea threatening nuclear war on the West, tropical storms destroying huge civilizations, and the recent tragedy in Las Vegas, there seems to be no room for any more distress and upset. That was until the “illegal” Catalonia Independence Referendum, which has seen the north-east of Spain plunge into a state of emergency.
The violent scenes that have emerged from the region, usually famous for its peaceful beaches, have been condemned by politicians from all corners of the globe. The whole world watched in horror as police clashed with protestors, using extreme force to regain control which has left 888 people injured.
However, in amongst the chaos came a scene so defiant, that it has eclipsed reports of brutality and has become the iconic image of the protest…
The world was left stunned as images of riot police, clad in all black uniform with batons extended, flooded the internet. The menacing photographs captured police dragging, kicking and hitting protestors, some of which were elderly, as they attempted to vote for the regions independence.
Rubber bullets were fired at crowds as they advanced towards polling stations, in order to place their vote on the independence of the region, which includes the city of Barcelona.
The region of Catalonia has its own language, and many want it to break away from Spain and become its own republic. However, the Spanish government have called the referendum “illegal” and refuse to accept the validity of the vote. As a result, the government ordered police to close down voting stations and destroy ballet boxes.
But the firefighters of the region were not prepared to allow the police to take control. Instead, they did something remarkable to protect the people…
