Matilda (1996) is my favorite nostalgic feel-good movie. When I was a kid, my mom told me about a teacher who’d been incredibly mean to her at school, so when I saw Miss Trunchbull, I immediately made a connection and was hooked.
As a kid, I was pretty big on magic, and I loved seeing Madilta use her telekinetic powers, and I think almost all of us can remember the feeling of triumph we felt when we saw Bruce manage to eat Miss Trunchbull’s cake against the odds.
“But what happened to the cast of Matilda?” I hear you ask. Well, you’re about to find out.
1. Mara Wilson – Matilda
Unlike a lot of child actors, Mara Wilson didn’t fall prey to the ‘curse’. However, she has faded into obscurity. Despite a promising start a child actor, she didn’t act for over 12 years and claimed that her time on the big screen was over, but made a return to acting in Billie Bob Joe (2015). Whilst she was on her break from acting, she earned a degree in drama and became a writer.
2. Danny DeVito – Mr. Wormwood
Needless to say, Danny DeVito has continued acting consistently since playing Mr. Wormwood in Matilda. He’s best-known for his older films like Batman Returns (1992), but since 2011 he’s acted in the hit sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He got his star on the Hollywood walk of fame in 2011. His latest movie is Animal Crackers, which was released in June 2017.
3. Rhea Perlman – Mrs. Wormwood
Rhea Perlman has consistently been working as an actress since starring in Matilda. Her recent movies include I’ll See You in My Dreams (2015) and Sing (2016). She’s also had a successful career has a children’s author, writing the Otto Undercover books.
4. Brian Levinson – Michael Wormwood
Unlike Wilson, Brian Levinson has completely faded into obscurity, and he only acted once after Matilda in an episode of Seinfeld called ‘The Apology’ in 1997. But he did turn up to the Matilda cast reunion in 2013.
There’s few movies from the mid ’90s that have endured in the popularity as much as Matilda. It’s now a children’s classic that will no doubt be enjoyed by many generations to come. Everyone loves an underdog story, and Matilda is certainly one of the best.
