The Most Awkward Late Night Talk Show Guests of All Time

The late night talk show has been a favorite of audiences everywhere for a long time now. It’s the perfect way to delve into the secret lives of the famous and watch them interact as (semi) normal people. We examine the mannerisms and personalities of celebrities, who we don’t typically get to know in a candid setting, and ultimately decide whether or not they’re actually cool in real life.

Although there may not technically be a lot going on, the entertainment value of the late night talk show is bizarrely high. Much of this is thanks to the fact that every once in a while, something painfully uncomfortable happens during the interview. As it is all recorded live, these moment are difficult for the host to recover from, and typically become a topic of discussion the following day. Below are some of the worst offenders of talk show awkwardness, for your sadistic viewing pleasure:

Kathy Griffin

Apparently having been banned for her erratic behavior on multiple talk shows, Griffin is no stranger to making audiences uncomfortable. She was banned from The Late Show with David Letterman for cursing in the past, but a few years later, Letterman let her back on to redeem herself. It did not go as planned, and ended with Griffin deciding to take her dress off. The awkwardness is palpable, and the creepy face Letterman makes as he watched her undress does not help:

Casey Affleck

Never before have two people gotten off more on the wrong foot. At the start of his interview on The Late Show, Stephen Colbert makes a joke about Affleck’s casual attire, and it’s all downhill from there. Affleck did not take the jab lightly, and, visibly annoyed, told Colbert, “You’re implying I’m being rude.” Cue an uncomfortable half-angry laughter that remains for the next few minutes as they try to get past the tiff, but come up unsuccessful. It even escalated to the point of a physical fight being suggested.
