One of the most important decisions that parents make for their child is their name. My dad wanted to call me Kate after the English singer-songwriter Kate Bush, but my mom objected and decided to call me Emma instead. I never thought much about baby names until I started high school and saw the other pupils giggling at a girl whose name rhymed. Having little regard for the social welfare of your child is something that some of rock and roll’s biggest stars pioneered, with David Bowie deciding to call his son Zowie Bowie in 1971.

Recently, former girlfriend of Hugh Hefner, Holly Madison, decided to call her daughter Rainbow and her son Forest. However, in the twenty-first century, bizarre baby names are becoming increasingly common – even amongst ordinary people. I dread to think of what this will lead to in the schoolyard. Some of the most bizarre genuine baby names to be registered in 2017 include Thor, Snow, and, since the English rockstar’s death in 2016, Bowie. But even for the most daring parents, there are some names which are completely off limits…
