Massive 270KG Preserved Blue Whale Heart Goes On Display

Our fascination with the ocean blue is an enduring and passionate one.

Whether it be our imaginations, conjuring up images of hitherto undiscovered grizzly creatures of the deep or astonishing tales of lost sailors, only to resurface months or even years later: we all love tales of the deep blue sea. The ocean is a vast and uncharted habitat, chock-full of strange and unpleasant creatures. We all love a monster, right up until the point that it eats us, and if that monster happens to come from the vast depths of the ocean’s unexplored chasms, then all the better, all the scarier, all the more compelling.

Just recently such a mystery appeared to have risen to the surface from the murky depths of the ocean blue, after a vast 50 ft “sea monster” was discovered washed up on the shore of an Indonesian island.

The creature was, in the end, tentatively identified as a whale in an advanced stage of decomposition, scientists estimated that the leviathan could have been dead for several weeks or even months.

Finding a deceased whale in decent physical condition is notoriously difficult; the gases released following a whale’s death serve to alter its appearance, rendering it rather different to its previous aesthetic as it roamed the deep seas. This makes the Royal Ontario Museum’s new exhibit all the more impressive.
