07 Sep Phone Scammer Calls Cop Pretending To Be From The IRS, Hilarity Ensues
Some of us are unfortunate enough to get telephone scams pretty much every day. These crooks ring us up to “inform” us that there’s an issue with our credit cards or that someone close to us has been in an accident.
In fact, very recently there was a phone scam in which crooks called people without them knowing that the phone call was being recorded. They would then claim to work for a certain company before asking, “Can you hear me?” and if the victim responded with a “yes”, they would edit the recording to make it appear as though they had agreed to a verbal contract for an enormous purchase.
However, this particular phone scam story revolves around the IRS, or rather, someone pretending to be from the IRS. There have recently been a huge rise in scam phone calls of this nature.
The IRS Commissioner John Koskinen warns;
“Don’t be fooled by surprise phone calls by criminals impersonating IRS agents with threats or promises of a big refund if you provide them with your private information. If you’re surprised to get a call from the IRS, it almost certainly isn’t the real IRS. We generally initially contact taxpayers by mail.”
The IRS scam calls were something of an epidemic sweeping unsuspecting people in the States. A con artist would call their victims pretending they are from the IRS and insist that they received a call back immediately or the victim would be in trouble with the law and might even be arrested. They would then tell their victims to reveal very personal information about themselves so that they could steal their identities.
Well a phone scammer recently called someone who ended up getting them into A LOT of trouble, and it was well-deserved.
