30 Jun Serena Williams’ New Cover Shoot for Vanity Fair Receives Negative Backlash
Reigning tennis champion, Serena Williams became Beyonce’s successor as pregnancy goddess this week when Vanity Fair unveiled her stunning naked photoshoot for their August issue.
News broke in January that Serena was expecting her first child with her fiancee, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. It was certainly a whirlwind romance. Serena met Ohanian in 2015 in a hotel whilst in Rome. They quickly became engaged, announcing the engagement publicly in December of 2016. Nothing about their courtship wasn’t public, tabloids extensively covered the couple’s steamy dates in Paris and documented the trips Alexis took around the world just to watch his girlfriend do what she does best.
It was in January that Serena discovered that she was eight-weeks pregnant. Talking to Vanity Fair, Serena said she didn’t suspect that she was pregnant until she was sick court-side, practising. She revealed that her “heart literally dropped” when she say the test result. She continued;
“Oh my God, this can’t be – I’ve got to play a tournament […] How am I going to play the Australian Open? I had planned on winning Wimbledon this year.”
But of course, Serena remains a force to be reckoned with, even whilst pregnant. After discovering the happy news, she went on to win all seven matches of the Australian Open without batting an eyelid. And now she confidently posed for Vanity Fair wearing nothing other than her underwear and a body-chain. But of course, pictures of a woman being pregnant, naked and fierce was going to garner some negative attention.
