Professional Photographers Used $500 Cameras to See How They Measured up to Amateurs Using Gear Worth $5000

Emmert Wolf once said: “A man is only as good as his tools”. But was he 100 percent correct in his claim, or was good old Emmert spouting poppycock, ignoring the fact that prowess always comes hand-in-hand with mastery no matter what instruments the individual holds in his or her hands?

This very question was on the minds of Daniel and Rachel, photographers at Mango Street, a content creation studio which assists brands in stretching their reach across Instagram and reinforcing their creative edge. After being consistently questioned over what camera they used, they decided to investigate in an effort to prove once and for all that professional camera gear does not necessarily make flawless photos and that a hefty degree of expertise and skill is involved in getting the money shot that we all yearn for.

In order to test out their theory, the photographers designed an experiment where they gave a high-end $3,300 Canon 5D Mark IV with a $1,650 Canon 35mm f/1.4L II lens to their friend, who is not a professional yet, had a basic understanding of photography. Meanwhile, the two professional photographers received an inexpensive (~$500) Canon Rebel T3i with low-end lenses (a kit 18-55mm and a 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens). So, do the tools make the man? Or does a bad workman always blame his tools? Let us find out.
