14 Jun Production Shut Down on ‘Bachelor in Paradise’ Due to Reported Sexual Incident
Of all the myriad reality TV formats out there, the dating game show has got to be the strangest. These elimination-style competitions, which usually pit around 15 to 20 contestants against one another in a romantic tournament to win the heart of one gorgeous man/woman, are among the most popular breeds of reality TV.
Yet it’s a little weird that we all get so invested in artificial romances between complete strangers. However, the nature of these programmes means that it’s hard not to get sucked in. Even if you initially watch with a sense of detached indifference, eventually you’ll end up utterly engrossed in dynamics and interactions of the cast, desperately rooting for your own favourite participant and cursing the people you’ve arbitrarily chosen to dislike.
The Bachelor is probably the oldest and best-known examples of this kind of reality TV format, and has been around in one form or another since the inception of reality TV as a genre. Created and produced by Mike Fleiss and presented by Chris Harrison, The Bachelor series of shows have been successful ever since the premiere of the first episode way back in 2002. Now there have been dozens of international versions and a number of spin-offs.
Bachelor in Paradise is the latest iteration of the format, currently airing on ABC. Yet apparently production for the latest block of episodes has halted and the cast are in lockdown, after disturbing allegations of sexual misconduct came to light during filming for the fourth season.
