11 Aug The ‘Leave Britney Alone’ Guy Is All Grown Up Now, And Is Breaking Hearts On The Internet
There was a time when we didn’t walk around with the newest iteration of iPhone glued to our hands, live-stream every moment of our mundane existences and spend hours chuckling over memes and the latest viral sensation.
Whilst it’s increasingly difficult to remember a world devoid of Kylie Jenner’s Snapchats and the like, we must remind ourselves that there was a time when the avocado was just an avocado, not a lifestyle choice. Certainly, the world we live in today is wholly meditated by the World Wide Web and social media. I mean, who are you if you don’t have a Facebook account or an Instagram following?
In the eyes of the world: a nobody.
This brave new world does have its advantages. Platforms such as Instagram and YouTube have allowed talented young creatives to harness their talent for next to nothing and achieve incredible success. It has also allowed the disenfranchised to find esoteric pockets of people who understand and can emphasise with their experiences. This, amongst many other factors makes the time we live in incredibly exciting. However, I often find myself nostalgically returning to the golden age of the internet. I mean, there is just something special about the time when we all spent hours on dial-up, logging into MSN messenger and talking to our crushes for hours.
One of the first social media stars was undoubtedly Chris Crocker. Catapulted into fame after his passionate defence of Britney Spears’ performance at the MTV Music Video Awards, Chris Crocker practically invented the concept of going viral. So shall we take a look at what he looks like now?
Spoiler: it’s pretty good.
