Perhaps more than at any other point in history, women are now inundated seemingly without cease with images of the “perfect” body. The rise of social media has surely contributed to this. Now, as well as the covers of glossy magazines that depict flawlessly beautiful women, effervescent Instagram models flaunt their improbably toned physiques and roadside advertisements warn us that it is about time we were beach body ready.
In the face of such relentless beauty, it is hard not to aspire to those improbable goals. While it is hard to begrudge those who have worked incredibly hard on their physiques – as well as having some pretty excellent genes – the opportunity to wield Instagram as a tool from which to capitalise, being confronted with their images seemingly without cease has the potential to be damaging to those with body confidence issues.
After all, if you feel sensitive or insecure about your own body, seeing page after page of veritable paragons of beauty is not going to help whatsoever.
Slowly, fitness bloggers and models are starting to push back against this trend, by pointing out that rarely does someone look as flawless as they are portrayed online, and that it is incredibly damaging to compare yourself to carefully choreographed, potentially touched up images.
What’s more, in the world of fashion, the penchant for waif-thin models – while still prevalent – is being challenged by “plus size” models.
