Disney Breaks New Ground By Introducing Interracial Lesbian Parents To One Of Its Shows

The Disney Channel continued its mission to represent diversity and inclusivity recently, when it featured a interracial lesbian couple in a children’s programme. The programme in question was “Doc McStuffins” and the episode was entitled “The Emergency Plan” which featured the couple being parents to two children.

The characters were voiced by Wanda Sykes and Portia de Rossi, who are both lesbians in real life, and the show has been praised for the way it went about the representation. Choosing to not really focus on the fact that they were a same-sex family, the show decided to focus on its storyline, which was teaching children how to prepare for an earthquake, while also simply presenting parents who just happened to be lesbians.

Speaking in a blog post on GLAAD, Chris Nee, the show’s creator and executive producer spoke about why they felt the need to include this family set-up:

“I always envision Doc McStuffins as a show about what it means to accept everyone as part of our communities. As part of a two-mom family, I’m proud to have an episode that reflects my son’s world, and shows everyone that love is love in McStuffinsville,”
