03 Aug Your Favourite Emojis Actually Have Very Weird Official Names
It’s strange to think of a time when we didn’t have the humble smiley face to litter our text conversations, or to fill the space in an otherwise awkward email. Indeed, the emoji revolution has changed the way that we interact with our friends, family and work colleagues.
Instead of actually vocalising our sentiments, we can express how happy, sad or amused we are simply by scrolling through and selecting from the available emojis. Certainly, what better response is there to an irritating friend than the “poop” emoji? The answer is nothing – not even a plethora of curse words can convey the same sentiment. But the “poop” icon has nothing on the “tears of laughter” emoji. I challenge you to find a better way to express that you find something utterly hilarious.
Regardless of whether you feel like the “tears of laughter” emoji is silently mocking and judging you whenever it comes your way on Facebook, it’s evident that we live in a world where they’re used almost universally, regardless of age, race or background. However, they don’t come without their problems. Indeed, you could find yourself in quite a pickle if you accidentally send the “eggplant” emoji to your mum instead of your significant other.
Whilst the humble emoji has helped me to facilitate conversations and slide into DM’s with a reasonable amount of slickness and grace, it appears that they have been misleading us all the entire time. Indeed, their “official” names are just so bizarre and out-of-this-world that I can never look at them in the same way again. Just take a look for yourself…
1. “Joy”
2. “See no fear”
3. “Slightly smiling face”
4. “Japanese ogre”
5. “Information desk person”
