26 Jul HIV Infected Girl Becomes The Third Person To Go Into Remission

Originating at some point in the early 20th century and manifesting itself in AIDS (the first case of which was reported in 1981), HIV has claimed many lives over the years. Without treatment, the average survival time is around nine to 11 years, and the disease has taken many people, most notably the Queen singer Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991 after his diagnosis four years prior. Modern medicine has advanced to the point that we can offer treatment for those living with HIV which can significantly lengthen their lifespan, but now, we are looking for a cure.

A child born in South Africa contracted HIV immediately through her mother, but underwent treatment for the disease shortly afterward. She was expected to continue treatment throughout her life. But now, nearly eight and a half years later, she’s almost 10 years old, and she hasn’t needed treatment since. The drug appears to have gone into remission, giving doctors new hope of finding a cure for HIV.
