Review websites such as TripAdvisor have ensured that we don’t suffer through yet another culinary disaster or insufferable hotel stay. Instead of settling for a friend’s suggestion about what tapas bar we should visit the next time we go to Barcelona, we now have a whole horde of recommendations to peruse.

Tourists and natives alike take to the platform to recommend, disparage or profess indifference towards everything from restaurants to museums and galleries, making sure that we always get the best bang for our buck. Now, I don’t know about you, but I check websites such as TripAdvisor and Yelp diligently. Gone are the days were I would visit a restaurant just because I thought it looked “cool”, now I need to check in with TripAdvisor first…

The downside to such platforms is that scathing reviews have the potential to destroy businesses, especially when it comes to the cut-throat restaurant industry. I mean, would you visit a pizzeria which some user professed to be terrible? I think not. And in a world where so-called “trolls” run rife on the internet, it’s evident that some of the most negative reviews are left only for the reviewers’ own entertainment.

A sassy restaurant owner issued the best response to one such reviewer. Instead of issuing an apology, he named a cocktail after the one-star-review.
