In a world where mass media constructs and dictates what exactly we find beautiful, it’s difficult not to succumb to pressure to conform to society’s rather stringent expectations. In recent years, the Kardashians have come to represent the ideal womanly form. Amongst “inventing” the selfie, Kim Kardashian can be credited for creating the “belfie” – that is the butt selfie – and subsequently for bringing women’s backsides back into vogue after years of the waif thin, heroin chic look being “in”. However, the Kardashians’ look is also largely unattainable, and many women have resorted to going under the knife to achieve their extreme ratios.

Whilst channelling the look of Instagram models and the Kardashian Klan is made easier by the use of contouring palettes and Snapchat filters, the plastic surgery industry continues to boom, long after it became popularised in the early Noughties. Some people, however, remain committed to previous ideals of perfection, such as one couple who spent a whopping $300,000 to resemble everyone’s favourite childhood dolls, Barbie and Ken.
