Twitter Applauds 86 Year Old Jewel Thief Caught Stealing From Walmart

Doris Payne is a notorious international jewel thief, estimating to have taken over $2 million worth of precious stones over the years. She’s also 86 years old, but this elderly burglar is still not ready to retire from her illustrious career.

Payne’s career spans six decades, with her first run in with the law being back in 1952, when she was 22-years-old. Her usual method was to enter jewellery stores posing as a wealthy woman looking for a diamond ring. She would charm the employee behind the counter, asking to see a variety of items. She would distract and confuse him into forgetting how many items there were, taking one or two of them for herself.

She is best known for once stealing a 10-carat diamond ring, which was valued at a staggering $500,000, from Monte Carlo in the 1970s. Her thefts and run-ins with the law were so infamous that a Netflix documentary, titled The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne, was made about her in 2013. But her recent heist wasn’t quite so grand as her previous ones were, as rather than a high-class jewellery store, she stole from a Walmart.
