Callum McSwiggan is a British blogger and social media personality who comments on LGBT issues, sex education and mental health. As at the time this article was written, he had over 52,000 followers on Twitter, and his YouTube channel has gained more than 75,000 subscribers and over 7.1 million views. As part of his advocacy work, Callum has taken part in a Netflix challenge to raise awareness of suicide which was inspired by the hit show 13 Reasons Why, in which the main character ends her life and posthumously narrates her reasons for doing so through tape recordings she leaves behind. In addition to this, he has also championed “LGBT heroes” who have helped advance the LGBT movement in any way.
As a major voice for young people on LGBT issues, it is clear that when Callum talks or tweets, you can be sure quite a few people are listening. Not only is he passionate about sexual orientation, he is also an avid animal lover. Callum recently made a departure from tweeting about mainly LGBT issues to discuss People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Founded in March 1980 by Ingrid Newkirk, PETA is arguably one of the most recognisable – some would even say infamous – organisations in the world when it comes to animal rights. It claims to have nearly 400 employees, 6.5 million members and supporters, and describes itself as the largest animal rights group in the world. Its slogan is “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.”
