It is a regrettable fact of war that those lowest down the socio-economic ladder are inevitably hit the hardest by the consequences of conflict. While political leaders make decisions in government that will hold powerful ramifications for the inhabitants of their country, it’s the men and women living in the midst of battlegrounds that are literally caught in the crossfire, powerless to influence any change or chance of peace.

Iraq has been gripped by war for several years now, most recently battling ISIS in a bitter conflict. While we all hear about the country’s struggles and its war ravaged visage, it is easy to forget that the consequences are very real indeed. War sparks confusion and a desperation to apprehend the enemy, this is only natural. In Mosul, this would appear to be the case, as images emerge depicting hundreds of suspected ISIS fighters being contained in confined conditions.

Reporters from the Associated Press visited the facility which, it has been claimed, included a room with 100 suspects cramped together in one small room. It has been reported that suspected ISIS fighters were lined up shoulder to shoulder in a room without electricity or ventilation, while temperatures at the facility were recorded at a sweltering 45c during the day of the reporters’ visit.
