18 Jul Atari Have Released Images Of Its First Console In 20 Years
While it no longer has the same gravitas as names such as Playstation, Nintendo or X-Box do today, Atari was once one of the most influential companies in the realm of video games. From the ’70s through to the mid-80s, the company defined the medium with classic arcade games such as Pong and Pac-Man, and even had a number of its own home consoles that dominated the market before the Nintendo Entertainment System debuted.
But after the video game crash of 1983, where the booming industry’s revenues dropped dramatically, in addition to the poor sales of the Atari Jaguar and its other later consoles, Atari was no longer a contender. After a series of losses, mergers, divisions and deals, the original company could be said to be there in name only. In its absence, the market was left to be dominated by newer brands such as Playstation.
But after the success of Nintendo’s re-release of their retro console as the NES Classic Edition, which came with 30 pre-installed classic games with more up-to-date software, it was announced that Atari will be following a similar strategy. The company is set to release its first console in 20 years: the Ataribox.
