18 Jul UK Hospital Staff Court Ordered To Collectively Pay £12.8 Million In Fines For Parking At Work
The staff working at an NHS hospital will have to pay a large sum of money to a parking firm after a long dispute with the company. The doctors and nurses working at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff have been at odds with the firm that runs the hospital car park for over a year now, with a total of 100,000 parking tickets filed against them, amounting to £12.8 million ($16.7 million) in total.
After a three day trial at Cardiff Civic Justice Centre, District Judge Clare Coates ruled in favour of Indigo Parking Services. The case involved three employees, but the charges are attributed to a total of 75 doctors and nurses. Campaigner Sue Prior told The Sun: “It is disgusting. This ruling is devastating for doctors and nurses across the country”.
Robert O’Brien quit his hospital job earlier this year after being hit with almost £800 ($1,042) in fines, “I loved the job but just couldn’t take it any more,” he told The Daily Mail. “I don’t think it’s too much to ask when you are working nights to be able to park at your place of work”.
