Some myths and urban legends are just too pervasive to ever die. No matter how often scientists and experts full of bluster tell us otherwise, there will aways be a cabal of true believers who remain convinced that the supernatural is being covered up, that extraterrestrials have made contact, and that in the weird and wild parts of the world, the strangest cryptozoological beasts lie in wait, shying away from exposure.
There are numerous examples of these strange, rumoured beasts. In Mexico they tell the tale of the Chupacabra, an uncanny goat-killing vampire with an insatiable hunger. In the snow-capped peaks of far-off Tibet, monks scare each other witless with stories of the great shaggy Yeti. Yet in my home of Scotland, the mysterious creature that we were equal parts fascinated by, skeptical of and yet affectionate towards was always the Loch Ness Monster.
To those who are unaware of its eerie reputation, this large freshwater lake near Inverness seems no different from countless others in the highlands. It appears placid, quiet and tranquil; yet since time immemorial there have been sightings of a monstrous sea serpent swimming beneath the water – a prehistoric scaly leviathan, perhaps the last living relic of the Jurassic age.
There have been countless searches for Nessie over the decades, some of which have utilised top-of-the-range sonar and other surveillance technology, and yet no formal investigation has turned up conclusive evidence that the beast exists. Despite that, there are still many people who remain adamant that Nessie is real to this day.
