This 26-Year-Old Model With A Rare Skin Condition Is Challenging Beauty Standards

Imagine being only 26-years-old, but having wrinkles all over your body. It’s a difficult thing to picture for those in their mid-twenties who have gone through life without complication, but for Sara Geurts, this is her daily reality. Originally from Minnesota, Sara was just 10-years-old when she was diagnosed with a rare skin condition called Dermatosparaxis Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. EDS is a connective tissue disorder that inhibits the body’s ability to produce collagen, meaning that the young woman has skin that wrinkles prematurely, making her appear far beyond her years.

But the inspirational model knows she has nothing to be ashamed of. Sara, who now lives in Los Angeles, is hell-bent on showing the world that beauty standards need to change. In 2015 she submitted her story to the Love Your Lines campaign, a project that encourages women to love themselves for who they are. Her most recent video, produced by Barcroft TV, has been viewed almost two million times, and is inspiring people across the globe.

1. There were signs of Sara’s Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome from an early age

2. The young women often used to let her condition beat down her confidence

3. It wasn’t until she was 22 or 23 years old that she learned to embrace her wrinkles

4. Instead of hiding who she was, Sara decided to take up photography and help expand what the beauty industry deems “beautiful”

5. She told Allure: “I aim to break society’s transparent barriers of perfection. Barriers that subliminally tell us all to be perfect in all aspects of life, work, social and personal interactions.”
