Anyone who has been in the same room as a voice-controlled smart speaker has wondered the same thing: just how much does this thing listen to? The answer to that question seems to be increasingly, everything. While privacy concerns have risen around the technology, so have impressive instances in which it helped in ways nobody knew it could. In this case, a smart speaker has gone so far as to potentially save a life.

Eduardo Barros, 28, was house-sitting a residence in Tijeras, New Mexico, accompanied by his girlfriend and her daughter. The couple began to argue, and it soon turned into a physical altercation. The clash escalated, with Barros eventually holding a gun to his girlfriend, asking her: “Did you call the sheriffs?” That’s when, unbeknownst to them, the smart speaker that was connected to surround sound in the room stepped in.
